Certain is it that there is no kind of affection so purely angelic as of a father to a daughter. In love to our wives there is desire; to our sons, ambition; but to our daughters there is something which there are no words to express. ~ Joseph Addison

The new house is coming along slowly but surely. D and I might finally be able to move in by end of November.
Visitors are often surprised by the things they see in our open plan house. Most will say that they really like the visual impact and design decisions. Do I care what others think? Not really. 2 designers will be living there. Not the curious George, Georginas and thunder stealers…

Nothing in the world is permanent, and we’re foolish when we ask anything to last, but surely we’re still more foolish not to take delight in it while we have it. ~ William Somerset Maugham, English dramatist novelist (1874 – 1965)

My sister is glad her school days are over. Her reasons being that she hates to commute and she does not have a flexible schedule.
I, on the other hand, enjoyed my school days even though they can be tiring and inconvenient. My Dutch classes were fun. I did not mind the snow, the rain or looking stupid at times. It was all part of the learning process…
The thing is, people my age are not expected to go back to school. They usually have full time jobs, kids and garages full of crap. All these hindering them from pursuing further studies. But since I do not have a 9 to 5 job and time consuming obligations, I look forward to getting back to school to proceed with Level 3 Dutch.
Now that most companies are trimming the fat, barely hiring and reorganizing… school is actually a smart move. Ambition, the need for change, and a desire to increase your current skill sets are some of the reasons. Why not reset our paths by occasionally immersing ourselves in a learning environment.
What’s stopping you?

D and I went to our first Malaysian food fair on the 18th of October. This is organized by the MABL at a school cafeteria in Antwerp. Like most Malaysian events, it was colorful and diverse. This does not apply only to the clothing, but to the people of many races, the food and also the language.
We got to know a few more Malaysians. And also the interesting stories of how they ended up here. We met the (usually Belgians) husbands of the women whom we know from last month’s Open House event. And of course we sampled the food. As Malaysians, most of us are familiar with the food since we either ate them at home or at our ever popular hawker stalls.
If you are curious, here’s more on Malaysian food.

Reading How To Identify and Deal With Different Types Of Clients made me want to laugh and cry at the same time.
Long story short, here’s the list of clients you might get in the design business:
- The passive aggressive
- The family friend
- The under-valuer
- The nit-picker
- The scornful saver
- The I-Could-Do-This-Myself
- The control freak (a.k.a. you are why I want to be Dexter)
- The dream client (I was an in-house designer, I have met these, they are nice…)

International Film Festival in Ghent is from 6th to 17th October. D and I chose to watch an Asian British production called She, A Chinese. The movie follows the turbulent journey of a young woman from her village in China to London, England.
I personally do not know of any individual who has endured as much as the character in the movie. I guess that is what you can accomplish in film making. To me, the character is a merging of several challenging lives. The movie brings you on a journey from village to city. You are forced to trek from East to West. And rushed unwittingly from simple innocence to face the cold hard reality of life.
She, A Chinese is authentic in depiction yet confusing in direction. I can’t quite decide whether it is good, bad or mediocre. This movie calls for a re-watch.

D and I finally managed to eat at Cafe Theatre, Ghent. This was my first visit, so I have no clue as to what to expect. D told me that they are pretty decent.
And pretty decent indeed. Though the restaurant is quite big, having 2 floors and capacity to sit more than 50 people, it emits a cozy and friendly atmosphere. Maybe it has to do with the fact that it was Sunday and people are out with their kids…
Food was very good. D had the steak (pictured above). It was a fine piece of Charolais Belge cooked to perfection. That animal didn’t die in vain. I chose the beef tartare which is the restaurant’s specialty. I can never say no to signature dishes. Where’s the fun in eating out if you are always eating stuff you can prepare on your own.
On a side note, we noticed that all the servers working that evening are young and pretty females. It can never hurt to dress up your business venue with beautiful staff. Aesthetic aside, these girls are quite the attentive, friendly and efficient waitresses. If this is America, these girls would have earn a bucketful of tips by end of their work shifts.
Thumbs up for Cafe Theatre. I will definitely be going back.
