Progressive Soul

It’s important to be heroic, ambitious, productive, efficient, creative, and progressive, but these qualities don’t necessarily nurture the soul. The soul has different concerns, of equal value: downtime for reflection, conversation, and reverie; beauty that is captivating and pleasuring; relatedness to the environs and to people; and any animal’s rhythm of rest and activity. ~ Thomas Moore

Healthcare

The US House of Representative passed the healthcare measures today! I never thought I’ll see this day. Well, I never thought I’ll see this day so soon…

Getting enough votes for the approval was a huge obstacle, thus making this a wondrous victory for Obama. Anyhow, this will be nothing compare to what is to come. The overhaul of a nation’s health care system… I can’t even fathom it.

I wish the US and its people all the best. Maybe in 10 years, my American friends can enjoy the kind of health benefits that I am enjoying as a Malaysian and Belgian.

Swine Flu Statistics

As many as 80 million Americans have been infected with H1N1 swine flu, up to 16,000 have been killed and more than 360,000 hospitalized ~ U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The above statement came from the CDC. It was a news article I found at Reuters. Is this for real? Is it the media fiddling with people’s fear? If 16,000 people died in the US, how many died worldwide? How many died in countries where they do not have the vaccine nor proper medical care? This is just mind boggling, not to mention depressing!

Top 5 Killers

According to this article, the 5 biggest killer in our world are:

  1. Poor nutrition, which includes obesity and being overweight.
  2. Unsafe sex.
  3. Alcohol.
  4. Bad sanitation and hygiene.
  5. High blood pressure.

Be Reminded…

I don’t know why exactly but the following essay makes a lot of sense to me. Thought I’ll share…

As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn’t supposed to ever let us down, probably will. You’ll have your heart broken and you’ll break others’ hearts. You’ll fight with your best friend or maybe even fall in love with them, and you’ll cry because time is flying by. So take too many pictures, laugh too much, forgive freely, and love like you’ve never been hurt. Life comes with no guarantees, no time outs, no second chances. you just have to live life to the fullest, tell someone what they mean to you and tell someone off, speak out, dance in the pouring rain, hold someone’s hand, comfort a friend, fall asleep watching the sun come up, stay up late, be a flirt, and smile until your face hurts. Don’t be afraid to take chances or fall in love and most of all, live in the moment because every second you spend angry or upset is a second of happiness you can never get back.

Flu Update

I have a little bit of a sore throat and a minor cough. I hope it is caused by lack of sleep and too much junk food (Mmmm…junk food) during Gentse Feesten. I hope it is not the swine flu. :-P

Right now, there is no cause for a panic regarding this fast spreading pandemic. Just keep an eye on the news, and act accordingly.

I’m doing the following:

  1. Taking a staycation. I do not want to be quarantined at any airports or hospitals (they are doing this in Asia). Nor do I want to get the flu from a fellow passenger.
  2. Eat fresh and organic produce. Easier said than done…
  3. Take vitamins to boost the immune system. This one is tricky because H1N1 is known to wreck havoc on healthier individuals. And it is morphing!

Flu Pandemic

Looks like the wide spreading swine flu has reached a worrying level. WHO has just declared it the first flu pandemic of the 21st century.

I do not see people dropping like flies. But pandemic aside, I shall be postponing my trip back to Malaysia. There’s the tropical heat to think about. Temperature can hit 35 degrees during the summer months! Along with the high humidity, it will be unbearable. Then there’s the peak period airfares I want to avoid. D and I shall plan our travels for October or November.

Better be safe than sorry…

Health Care?

Holy crap! I just read this from Business Week:

Seven thousand hospital patients in the U.S. health-care system die every year after receiving the wrong drug or dosage, and more than a million are sickened.

In 2005, my white blood count was lower than normal. I was to get weekly blood tests over a 2-month period so that my doctor can rule out any possible blood diseases. After 8 painful blood tests, my American doctor concluded that it is nothing to worry about. She said it is probably just a weird characteristic I possess. That’s it? What the hell?!

Oh well, maybe I should be thankful that I was never hospitalized. Or worst yet …to die because of the stupidity of some medical staff. The tiny scar that I got for Lyme Disease test (long story…) shall always be a reminder.

Hotdogs, Burgers & Tacos

I do not care for American junk food and do not miss the I want it and I want it now lifestyle that I left behind a year ago. But dang it I do like Mexican food. Glad to see that the Asians are time efficient and healthy. Way to go my people!
