Yet another eating place that you will not be disappointed in. If you are in Ghent, hungry, craving for some good honest food, and do not want to spend a fortune, Lepelblad is the place to go.
I had the grilled tuna and pasta while D ordered lamb with potatoes. Our food was delicious. Only one small complain (if I can even call it that) came from D. He wished that there were more meat on his plate. But I guess that’s a matter of preferences. I won’t mind if my pasta dish was completely vegetarian. Still would have tasted great.
Yep Lepelblad. I have a feeling we’ll be there again.

My parents will be leaving Belgium tomorrow. As farewell and thanksgiving dinner, we went to the restaurant at Hotel Messeyne with D and his parents.
It was a lot of very good looking delicious food. It was a pity we have eaten ourselves silly in the past few weeks. I will definitely go back again when I have regain my appetite.

A Food Affair has been on our restaurant list for the longest time. So, on a chilly Tuesday evening, we finally went.
The atmosphere is nothing to shout about. It is a just as a restaurant should be. Friendly, comfortable and rather unassuming.
Personally, I never care much for fusion dishes. But oh my goodness! I can’t think of any appropriate words to justify the food experience. All I remembered were my taste buds going Ding-Dong-Hello?!. I haven’t had curry this good for a long long time and definitely not in Europe. I get cravings just looking at the photos.
A Food Affair is definitely well worth trying out if you are in Gent. A must for those who are into Asian fusion. For myself and D, I foresee more visits to this delightful restaurant.

Can you believe that I made the above? I’m so pleased with myself right now.
These little darlings are known as curry puffs. A popular and common snack in Malaysia and Singapore. I am going to make some for the last day of school (next Friday). Gonna be a busy week!

If you think that D and I had to eat bugs and roots to survive Borneo, think again…
Here we are drinking sparkling wine, imported water and eating fine Western cuisine. And oh, no sandals and shorts allowed when it is dinner at The Coast. Sabahans are generally easy going people but we do have certain etiquette’s to live up to. Maybe something that was imparted on us by the Brits. Damn the colonial masters.
The atmosphere at The Coast was fantastic. Food was ok in my opinion. According to my brother, the young German chef must be having a rough day because his dishes didn’t taste as good compared to previous times. And I find that quite amusing. How can you have a bad day when you come from wintery Germany and your current work place is Rasa Ria, Tuaran?

Two years in Ghent and I still find little gems like De Kleine Burgemeester Restaurant. What a lovely surprise!
The little restaurant is nothing special until the friendly waitress smiles at you. Then it feels like walking into the house of your 100 year old auntie. The poor place has seen better days and is rather gloomy actually. Yet there is a certain familiarity and coziness. Humble might be the word to describe this little eatery that is manned by two people – the cook and the waitress. The food is nothing to sing about. Just honest good food made with fresh ingredients. D even complained that his dish has too much cheese. The house red wine is fabulous though.
No fancy food, outstanding service or fantastic atmosphere here. But it won me over for being what it is – unpretentious, welcoming and familiar. Places and people like this is the reason why I am sure I’ll always find excuses to come back to Ghent.

The House of Eliott has been on our restaurant list for almost 2 years. I am glad we finally made it there. And what a gorgeous experience it was! Delicious meal, fantastic house wine (even the non-wine drinker enjoyed), friendly unpretentious services, and a cosy environment. I love this place…
If The House of Eliott would have been opened during New Year’s Eve, it would have been our first choice of restaurant to spend the evening. The owner said that it is not worth it. Hmmm, now that we think about it, that concept works both ways.
Every New Year’s Eve, we spent a small fortune for a meal just because it is a special evening. So D and I decided to welcome the new year with home cooking this time round. We got all necessary ingredients for quarter of the cost and we are going to spend the evening in lovely Ghent. I am sure we will have as much fun as we did at those weird New Year’s Eve dinners under the stairs or in the attic of some hectic restaurants.
Cheers to a happy, healthy and beautiful new year 2010!

D and I just came back from eating at Korenlei Twee. Very good food for a very decent price. Yum!
Eating lunch at nice restaurants is one of the many tips and tricks of a budget traveler. However, it also proved to be a smart move for busy people who simply do not feel like cooking or eating fast food.
Ah. Life is good.

D and I finally managed to eat at Cafe Theatre, Ghent. This was my first visit, so I have no clue as to what to expect. D told me that they are pretty decent.
And pretty decent indeed. Though the restaurant is quite big, having 2 floors and capacity to sit more than 50 people, it emits a cozy and friendly atmosphere. Maybe it has to do with the fact that it was Sunday and people are out with their kids…
Food was very good. D had the steak (pictured above). It was a fine piece of Charolais Belge cooked to perfection. That animal didn’t die in vain. I chose the beef tartare which is the restaurant’s specialty. I can never say no to signature dishes. Where’s the fun in eating out if you are always eating stuff you can prepare on your own.
On a side note, we noticed that all the servers working that evening are young and pretty females. It can never hurt to dress up your business venue with beautiful staff. Aesthetic aside, these girls are quite the attentive, friendly and efficient waitresses. If this is America, these girls would have earn a bucketful of tips by end of their work shifts.
Thumbs up for Cafe Theatre. I will definitely be going back.

I have 8 heads of red cabbage growing in the veggie garden. In the attempt of using up a couple of these giant vegetables, I learned how to make braised red cabbage.
Red cabbage is not my favorite vegetable. I have either consciously or subconsciously avoid having it on my plate.
But something happened while harvesting, cleaning, cutting, cooking and eating this somewhat unsophisticated dish. I find myself liking, even craving a little for this awful smelling, lumpy purple (it’s not red) vegetable.
Strange huh? Maybe it is acquired taste?
